We examine violent extremism in northern Mozambique from a regional perspective and believe that it requires coordinated regional efforts and approaches. We aim at strengthening relations between community and security actors, promote open interfaith dialogue, reduce violence against women, and encourage peaceful collaboration.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Nepal<\/h4>\n <\/div>\n

The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord in 2006 between the Nepali government and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) marked the end of the Civil War that started a decade earlier, but significant challenges to the peace process persist. Search was established in Nepal in 2006 with the aim to support the peace process. We used our global expertise in building multimedia projects, facilitating dialogue, and collaborating with local partners to address the peace process challenges and promote nonviolent conflict transformation. Our programs focused around reconciliation, democratic participation of marginalized groups, access to security and justice, education sector governance and accountability, economic participation, and collaborative and inclusive leadership.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Madagascar<\/h4>\n <\/div>\n

We started working in Madagascar in 2011 and have grown to become the main conflict transformation organization in the country, complete with a head office, five sub-offices, two field offices, and an audio production studio. Search-Madagascar\u2019s participatory approach engages media, civil society, youth, women, and religious leaders to build lasting and sustainable peace. Our mission will continue under a new national association, Tokotany Iraisana (TKI). TKI\u2019s objective is for institutions, social norms, and markets to adopt the Common Ground Approach. Search-Madagascar officially closed its office in December 2019. TKI is already registered and has three current projects, with more in the pipeline.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Over the last 20 years, Search-Liberia tackled critical issues ranging from youth development to reconciliation and transitional justice, security sector reform, and behavior change communication. Building on the reputation of our nationwide radio production house Talking Drum Studio, the newly independent Liberian NGO, Talking Drum Studio \u2013 Liberia Peace Centre (TDS-LIB) continues to spread creative media and reliable, credible, and timely information. By partnering with community radio stations and producing in local pidgin dialects, TDS-LIB reaches 4.5 million people across the country. The Liberian government has incorporated Search-led, local-level community reconciliation plans into the broader national framework. TDS-LIB envisions a hybrid portfolio that cuts across civil society, government, and the private sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>

We worked in Guinea starting in 2003 on a wide range of topics, including elections, natural resource conflicts, youth engagement, and post-Ebola recovery. Search-Guinea\u2019s activities promoted reconciliation and use media to promote peace, empower civil society, and engage marginalized groups. Search-Guinea\u2019s program set a benchmark in the area with its expertise in communication for behavioral change. Search-Guinea transitioned to Talking Drum Studio \u2013 Guinea (TDS-GUI) \u2013 a local non-political organization that was registered in 2021. Transfer of the existing knowledge and capacities will ensure that our achievements are sustained and perpetuated. Search-Guinea official closed in the second quarter of 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>

North Macedonia<\/h4>\n <\/div>\n

In North Macedonia, our staff have already established a local NGO, the Center for Common Ground (CCG). Using tools such as education, media production, public service announcements, training, and theatre, CCG leads conflict transformation across all levels of society. CCG has implemented over 20 projects across more than 20 municipalities, with support from local and regional donors. CCG was the first and is still one of the few organizations that work locally to institutionalize community action teams in response to violent extremism. In June 2021, our staff has been completely incorporated into CCG, and Search-North Macedonia has closed.<\/p>\n<\/div>

We began working in Tunisia in 2011, with a unique focus on bottom-up, localized approaches, ranging from transforming violent extremism, to supporting democratic governance and youth engagement in politics. Search-Tunisia\u2019s work will continue through a national sister organization that will focus its work on Tunisia. The NGO will receive continuous capacity building until the end of 2023, when Search-Tunisia will close. Search-Tunisia\u2019s long experience as the leading peacebuilding organization in the country will drive the success of our new sister NGO.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The African Organization for Common Ground is a legacy of Search, which closed its programs in Morocco due to a shift in its global strategy. AOCG is committed to continuing the mission of Search in Morocco using the same approaches and strategies. Since 2001, the organization has worked in Morocco with Moroccan society to transform the way people and institutions deal with conflict and violence. Carried out in partnership with state institutions and civil society, our projects have helped to institutionalize mediation in Morocco and have obtained international recognition.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Sudan has long endured profound humanitarian challenges, but the war that erupted in April 2023 pushed the nation into an unprecedented crisis, triggering the world\u2019s largest wave of displacement. In response, Search for Common Ground Sudan demonstrated extraordinary resilience. Our team reorganized rapidly, delivering impactful initiatives that brought people together, offered healing, and empowered communities.<\/p>\n
We hosted community workshops and \"coffee conversations\" to foster dialogue, used interactive theatre to inspire change, and delivered psychosocial support that gave hope to those affected by conflict. We created safe spaces for women to connect and lead, and launched livelihoods activities that helped families rebuild their lives. These achievements inspired our donor to extend and expand support, impressed local authorities, and positioned us as a leading peacebuilding partner in Sudan.<\/p>\n
Today, Search Sudan is recognized as a trusted force in integrating livelihoods with peacebuilding\u2014proving that even in the darkest moments, collaboration, creativity, and resilience can pave the way for lasting peace.<\/p>\n<\/div>

When South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in July 2011, many hoped that sovereignty would bring peace, but the world\u2019s newest state descended into civil war in December 2013 - resulting in the internal displacement of one million people, with an additional 367,000 seeking refuge in neighboring countries. A humanitarian crisis around access to food and safety threatens many. We began working in South Sudan in June 2014, using radio programs, outreach activities, and support to local organizations to promote peace and end violence.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Burundi is threatened by political violence, press restrictions, and other tensions. Since 1995, we have supported peace and reconciliation by helping locals address transitional justice, gender-based violence, youth manipulation, and more. The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is the second-most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa, and one of the poorest in the region. It suffered intense droughts and famines, and prolonged conflicts in the 20th century. Since 2011, we have provided assistance in the Amhara region, using interactive tools such as radio, participatory theatre, comic books and mobile cinema to promote inclusive dialogue.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is rich with mineral resources and a diverse mix of ethnic groups. Unfortunately, this diversity has often caused violent divisions. The Second Congo War (1998 \u2013 2003) was the most deadly world conflict since World War II. We work to bolster the nation\u2019s maturing democracy, end ethnic conflict, promote gender equality, and transform the DRC into a peaceful country.<\/p>\n<\/div>
