Partnership with United Nations Office of the Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator advances shared mission of humanitarian diplomacy
WASHINGTON, DC (FEBRUARY 7, 2023) — Global peacebuilding organization Search for Common Ground today announced a new partnership with the United Nations’ most senior official dedicated to humanitarian affairs, the Office of the Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. The partnership will leverage the strengths of both organizations to save lives around the world through humanitarian diplomacy.
“Our partnership with Search for Common Ground to advance humanitarian diplomacy in conflict is unique and unprecedented in the international humanitarian sector,” said Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. “By combining the mandate and humanitarian response capacity of the UN with the relative nimbleness, adaptability, and community-based credibility of the largest peacebuilding NGO, we can not only save lives — we also have the opportunity to address the conflict-drivers that create these crises in the first place.”
“We are thrilled and hopeful about this partnership with the United Nations,” noted Shamil Idriss, CEO of Search for Common Ground. “For two decades we’ve seen the politics of isolation and the logic of war gain ground despite the grotesque levels of human suffering they have wrought. The solution is more creative engagement and diplomacy, not less. If successful, the innovative approach we are taking through this partnership can serve as a model for how the international system can partner with mission-driven NGOs, like Search, to save many more lives around the world.”
This announcement from Search for Common Ground comes less than a year after its merger with Preemptive Love Coalition and reinforces Search’s commitment to collaborative, innovative approaches and partnerships to change the world.
