When peace means going home

October 20, 2026

For Mah, peace isn’t abstract.

It’s her parents. Her village. The school she had to leave behind when conflict made it impossible to stay. She’s been away from both since.

When conflict disrupted Mah’s community and separated her from her family, it interrupted her childhood. It turned the most ordinary thing in the world—going home—into something she can only hope for.

That kind of proximity to conflict can go two ways. Without the right support, it becomes fuel for cycles of violence that never end.

But with the right tools, it becomes something else entirely: the deepest possible motivation to build something different.

This month, Search brought Mah and others from across Mali together. A group of young people who know what conflict costs, not from a distance, but from their own lives. They left with something Search has spent 40 years learning how to give: the understanding that conflict is not the same as violence.

One is inevitable. The other is a choice.

And that space—between conflict and violence—is exactly where young people can make all the difference. Imagine a whole generation acting on that belief, as something they’ve lived, tested, and proven in their own communities.

We’ve seen it. Young people who stopped a rumor before it became a riot. Who brought feuding neighbors back to the same table. Who found solutions to problems their communities had given up on.

That’s what we’re building. And your support makes it possible.
