Throughout the devastation of South Sudan’s five-year-long conflict, citizens have struggled to access impartial justice, both through the country’s customary and statutory courts. The duality of customary and statutory law, coupled with limited capacity and resources, is a significant obstacle for those seeking justice. In this context, with the support of the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, we have launched our project ‘Facilitating Access to Justice in South Sudan’.
The project is improving access to justice and legal remedies for rural and marginalized citizens of South Sudan. It does so by increasing awareness of legal rights, providing citizens with legal aid, providing support to state agencies upholding the rule of law, and supporting justice service providers.
