Our long-term efforts are coming to fruition…

2011

The Working Group garnered support for the passing of a UNGA Resolution to safeguard holy sites and promote values of interreligious dialogue and cooperation. The aim was to give international political legitimacy to the principles of the Universal Code, helping religious leaders to protect holy sites.

2012

The Working Group visited the UN in New York and held consultations with the Chef de Cabinet of the President of the GA, country missions, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The positive response led to efforts to establish a core group of countries to develop the resolution.

2013

In January 2013, the Working Group once more visited the UN in New York and held various meetings, including with the Senior Special Advisor to the President of the General Assembly.

2014

Consultation held at the European Union, with follow-up meetings with various country missions. Search organized a one-day policy consultation on safeguarding Holy Sites for UN and US policy makers and academics in New York. Meetings were held with several UN missions and the GA Presidency.

2015

In November 2015 Bosnia Herzegovina formally decided to lead the efforts to develop a UN Resolution based on the Universal Code. Indonesia and Norway have agreed to be part of the core group of states supporting it.

2016

The Working Group consulted the Presidency of Bosnia Herzegovina regarding the possibility of Bosnia and Herzegovina taking the lead in the efforts to develop a UN Resolution based on the Universal Code. Indonesia and Norway have agreed to be part of the core group of states supporting it.
