Strengthening the capacities of the communities in management, prevention and peaceful resolution of conflicts in Chad

In 2013, we led an “Analysis of conflicts, natural disasters and vulnerability of the education system to shocks in Chad,” with funding from UNICEF. This analysis highlighted the drivers of conflicts, including geographic factors, demographic and cultural factors, and socio-economic and political factors. It also identifies the key actors and mechanisms to resolve conflicts in Chad, such as traditional leaders, religious leaders, security forces, and administrative authorities.

Based on the results of this study, we have designed a project integrated into the Peacebuilding and Education Advocacy Program (PBEA) launched by UNICEF in Chad. This project intends to strengthen communities’ ability to manage and prevent conflicts, as well as to reduce tensions within educational institutions and communities. We specifically want to strengthen the capacities of parents, teachers, and community members, including children and young people, to prevent, reduce, and manage conflicts. Working in three key regions, Guéra, Logone Oriental, and N’Djamena, this project is aimed at bringing together parents, teachers, community stakeholders (especially children), and PBEA actors

We are using a variety of tools, including:

  • Trainings in conflict transformation to provide parents and teachers with the necessary skills to prevent and manage conflicts
  • Participatory theater to facilitate understanding of conflicts and highlight positive attitudes and behaviors
  • Solidarity events to foster dialogue and collaboration between groups who are usually antagonistic
  • An interactive radio show called “Young Peacebuilders’ Dual” to raise young voices and educate children and youth about peacebuilding

Through this project, we also provide UNICEF and PBEA actors with adapted tools, such as educational and recreational kits on conflict prevention and management, and comic books endorsing tolerance, in order to promote a culture of peace.
