Nicole Esselen
Co-founder, KISANY
Being Swiss, Nicole worked for the ICRC, specialized in the protection of both prisoners of war and political prisoners. She worked in the DRC, Rwanda, Sarajevo and Iraq using her specialist knowledge. She lived for 12 years in Goma, DRC (1996-2008) and developed projects under the umbrella of “Let’s Go Kids”, a Belgian NGO in which she was an administrator until 2015; although she moved to Kenya in 2008 she continued to travel to Goma to work. All the projects they developed had one main goal: promoting peace in DRC, a country where the brutality of war has affected millions of people and destroyed millions of lives.
Living on the ground during some of Goma’s most turbulent years, she realized that people had needed better living conditions in order to have the resources and the resilience to face the daily challenges created by conflict that was all around them. They started from the ground, from the nucleus of society: the family cell. They developed projects for kids to learn again how to live together (instead of being in orphanages) before being reintegrated back into their families; they supported these same families with goods, but mainly with psychological support, giving them an opportunity to offload and supporting them in finding solutions that suited them. They were the bridge between families and their children. The majority of reintegrations were successful.
Alongside this Nicole co-founded www.kisany.com a high-end linen social enterprise with two other women. They wanted to change the way people look at Africa and create a proper exchange where both parties could find a benefit: the customers around the world enjoying their linen with a story; the embroiderers and tailors realizing their talents could give them a solid income and improve their daily life. “Give Work” became a real motto to enable people to take back the threads of their lives. Since 2016, she has withdrawn from “Let’s Go Kids” to concentrate on her own family but now feels ready to use the experience she has gained in a new capacity.
