Support Families Displaced by Escalating Conflict in Lebanon

The recent series of deadly attacks in Lebanon and resulting counter-strikes have intensified tensions within the country. As conflict continues to escalate within the region, families are enduring new burdens in their everyday lives.

The recent escalation of conflict and socio-political instability in Lebanon has forced countless families from their homes. As families seek refuge in areas like Mount Lebanon, Tripoli, and the Bekaa Valley, host communities are quickly becoming overwhelmed by the influx of displaced persons, intensifying the strain on already stretched communities.

Families like those of Soha Hamdan, a mother of seven, are living in constant fear. She and her family are currently fleeing their home and seeking refuge in a small mountain village. Soha shared, “As a mother, I feel an immense sense of responsibility that overwhelms me to a disturbing degree. My children rely on me for reassurance, but I’m consumed by fear for their safety and well-being. I desperately want to protect them from the harsh realities of our situation, yet the trauma of our displacement lingers.”

“Every loud noise brings back memories of the chaos we survived in 2006, and I see the fear reflected in their eyes, deepening my own sense of helplessness.”

Under the threat of further violence and uncertainty, immediate action is required to provide lifesaving aid to these families. Search for Common Ground is working to deliver essential support, including:

Food

Thousands of displaced people are struggling to access basic necessities. Our teams, working closely with local partners, are preparing to distribute emergency food and other essentials to the most vulnerable, ensuring they have access to the vital resources needed to survive this crisis.

Mental health & psychosocial support for children

The psychological toll of displacement, especially on children, is severe. We are working to establish child-friendly spaces where displaced children can find safety, engage in structured activities, and receive the mental health support they need to cope. These spaces offer children an escape from the trauma of conflict and the uncertainty of losing their homes, helping them rebuild a sense of stability and hope through play, art therapy, and social interaction.

Empowering local communities

We are working with local leaders to ensure that our emergency response is coordinated and effective. By building the capacity of local communities, we are a partner in fostering resilience and self-sufficiency in the face of this humanitarian crisis.

A 12-year-old girl, forced from her home in southern Lebanon, shared her experience on what it’s been like to live on the run with her family as they attempt to reach Beirut.

Every night, I hear the sounds of bombs falling. The ground shakes, and my heart beats so fast that I feel like it might explode. Sometimes I cover my ears to block out the noise, but I can still feel it in my chest.

During the day, the streets in our villages are empty. I used to play with my friends after school, but now there’s no school and no laughter in the streets. Instead, I look out of the window and see broken buildings and smoke. My mother tells me to stay inside because it’s not safe, but sometimes I sneak a glance and wonder if life will ever be the same again.

I miss my father. He’s far away, trying to find a way to bring us to safety with our relatives in Beirut. My mother tells me to be strong for my little brother.

Sometimes, when the noise of the bombs stops for a while, I sit quietly and imagine what peace might feel like. I imagine walking to school with my friends and feeling safe in my own home. All I want is to play outside without fear. I want my family to be together again, to sit around the table and laugh like we used to.
