Nepalese Soap Opera Documentary
[from The Current http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/2007/200701/20070116.html]
At least thirteen thousand. That's the number of people who died in the decade-long civil war in Nepal between Maoist rebels and the Nepalese army. The fighting ended last fall when Maoists and the government signed a peace deal. But not before the violence destroyed the economy and tore families apart.
Late last summer before the peace deal was brokered a group of young Nepalese began rebuilding their shattered families and country. They started a radio soap opera designed to encourage social change written by and starring young Nepalese. The story lines deal with their day-to-day struggles ... poverty, discrimination, violence with the characters searching for their own solutions. It was developed with help from Search for Common Ground ... an NGO based in Washington and Brussels.
Freelance broadcaster Eugenie Francoeur has just returned from Nepal and shared their story in a documentary. She is based in Montreal.
