The Eliav-Sartawi Awards for Middle Eastern Journalism

Search for Common Ground holds annual Awards for Journalism in the Middle East. Known since 2003 as the Eliav-Sartawi Awards for Middle Eastern Journalism, the Awards recognize and encourage journalism that contributes to better understanding between people and maintaining political dialogue in the Middle East.

The 2010 Winning Articles

“The Other Israelis” by Yaron London,

Yaron London has been a leading figure in the Israeli media for over 30 years, starting to work for “Kol Israel” in 1961.   He began writing for the Israeli newspaper “Yediot Aharonot” in 1988. Over the years, London has also hosted and directed various programs and documentaries on Israeli television channels One and Two. In 2003, he began co-hosting the daily current affairs program “London and Kirschenbaum” on Channel Ten. London is also involved in other cultural activities, having edited an anthology of Hebrew poetry and served as the Chairman of the ALMA Home for Hebrew Culture. In December 2007 he was awarded the Sokolow Prize for Journalism for lifetime achievement.

 

“Familiar Enemies” by Joharah Baker,

Joharah Baker has been the acting head of MIFTAH's Media and Information Department for three years and was formerly editor-in-chief of the online magazine Palestine Report, published by the Jerusalem Media and Information Center. She has also written for publications such as Bitterlemons.org and had many of her articles republished on international websites and blogs. Her writing is predominantly focused on conveying the Palestinian narrative and everyday life for Palestinians living in the occupied territories.
