for Common Ground established the Common Ground Awards in 1998
to honor achievements in conflict transformation and to acknowledge
individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions
to bridging divides and furthering understanding between groups
of people. The CG Awards celebrate the compassion and resolve
of the Awardees, and acknowledges their courage and strength of
spirit. These individuals and groups inspire others to be their
best, even in the face of violent conflict. Whether
people work internationally or in their local communities –
the work that they do and the transformation they bring –
are essentially the same.
This year we will honor:
- Senator
Roméo Dallaire: Humanitarian, advocate, and retired general,
his experiences during the Rwandan genocide led to his committed
activism to eliminate genocide around the globe. Senator Dallaire
leads SFCG’s Child Soldiers Initiative to eradicate the use
of child soldiers as weapons of war.
- Charlie
Rose: Veteran newsman, interviewer, and host of the Charlie
Rose Show, seen nationally on PBS. His program bridges ideas
and views from across political and ideological perspectives.
- Ishmael
Beah: Author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier,
a personal story of redemption and healing.
- Combatants
for Peace: Former Israeli combat soldiers and Palestinian
fighters who have joined together to work for peace in the
Middle East through non-violent action.
- Little
Mosque on the Prairie: This popular Canadian TV sitcom defuses
hate by promoting understanding through humor.
- Health
Care Coverage for the Uninsured: HCCU was a 2 year consensus
process with major healthcare stakeholders, that resulted
in a historic agreement to reduce the number of uninsured
in the U.S., starting with children.
The 2007 Common Ground Awards will be held at The Lighthouse, Pier 61, on Tuesday November 6th. Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary) will perform and the event emcee will be Charlayne Hunter-Gault, NPR and PBS Africa correspondent.
The
Eliav-Sartawi Awards for Middle East Journalism recognize
and encourage journalism that contributes to greater understanding
of the issues and people on both sides of the conflict. The
Awards will be presented at a separate event on November 7th
co-sponsored by the Columbia University School of Journalism
& School of International Public Affairs.
“We
stand for the idea that things can change and that solutions
can be found. The Awards celebrate and honor people who do the
work that needs to be done in the world.” - John
Marks, President and Founder, SFCG
