Search for Common Ground's (SFCG) mission is to transform how people deal with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. With Headquarters in Washington DC and Brussels, we design and implement multifaceted programs that aim to resolve conflict and prevent violence. We seek to help conflicting parties to understand their differences and act on their commonalties.

Summary of Post
SFCG is an international non-profit organization. We have approximately 60 staff in our Washington DC office, with approximately 350 staff worldwide. SFCG implements projects from 28 offices in 15 countries. We have offices in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and South East Asia. The International Human Resources Officer position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Director of Human Resources and Operations. The position plays a pivotal role in the recruitment and support of staff worldwide. The position collaborates closely with Country Directors, Program Directors, managers, and supervisors.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manages all aspects of the recruitment and selection of DC based and international based staff, in collaboration with the HR Director and other key staff.


  • Manages the SFCG Performance Evaluation Program and identifies areas in which training or further experience is needed


  • Generates turnover and other reports that pertain to recruitment and selection matters


  • Develops, updates, and maintains job description files


  • Initiates all letters and agreements necessary for hiring regular employees, temporary employees, and consultants


  • Conducts individual new employee orientation sessions, in consultation with supervisors and other designated staff; assists in the facilitation of group new employee orientation sessions


  • Oversees the SFCG Intern Program, including advising supervisors on intern recruitment procedures


  • Manages employment related compliance matters to meet local, state and federal/country regulations


  • Assists in the continuing development of the organization, its mission and its staff, through the sharing of experience and knowledge, particularly contributing to its "Best Practices and Lessons Learned" initiative

Essential Qualifications

  • Experience in human resource recruitment and selection matters (minimum of 1 to 2 years)

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in human resources, business administration, or a related area


  • Strong people skills and presentation/platform skills


  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential information


  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously


  • Ability to influence and manage change


  • Strong organizational skills, with ability to meet deadlines, both prescribed and self-imposed


  • Highly developed research and problem solving ability


  • Proficiency with business software applications

Desired qualifications

  • French language proficiency


  • Prior not-for-profit experience


  • Experience with NGO operations, particularly international recruitment


  • Knowledge of ADP software
