Internship: Communications

Search for Common Ground's (SFCG) mission is to transform how individuals, organizations and governments deal with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. We design and implement multifaceted programs that aim to resolve conflict and prevent violence. We operate from the premise that people need to understand the differences and act on the commonalties.

Responsibilities

The Intern for the Communications Division assists in the design and implementation of present and future projects, including the annual Common Ground Film Festival and Common Ground Awards. This has included researching and screening films to make sure they are appropriate and relevant to the mission of SFCG, as well as researching potential awards recipients.

1. Assist the Director of Communications:
• Maintain the filing system of current projects
• Maintain a tickler file of upcoming events
• Enter new communications contacts
• Develop and maintaining the Communication Database
• Distribute stories and press releases to identified media outlets
2. Assist in all aspects of planning and implementation of 2008 Common Ground Film Festival:
• Order films to preview for inclusion and keep organized records of their status
3. Perform outreach to universities and schools for the University Film Series:
• Ensure universities have all the support needed from SFCG to have a successful festival
• Continue a relationship with universities to turn festivals into annual events
4. Assist in the research of the 2008 Common Ground Awards

Desirable skills and experience

• Knowledge of and interest in communications
• Knowledge of and interest in documentary films
• Commitment to conflict resolution
• Independent worker not needing close supervision
• Excellent writing skills
• Self-starter; organized; detail-oriented
• Good Internet research skills
• Database experience
