School Curriculum Reform

school curriculum reform race

One recurring theme of the 2009 Working Group was the need for Americans to have a more expansive education about our nation's history. Most history curriculums tell only a small part of the story from one perspective, marginalizing or erasing other voices. The objective of the Search for Common Ground's School Curriculum Reform Project is to improve the teaching of history in participating U.S. schools by making the curriculum more racially inclusive. If successful, the outcome would be to create a new model for the way American History is taught.

Objectives

  • Organize a formal coalition of government officials from states that have successfully reformed their curriculums to be more racially inclusive.

  • Organize groups that have worked to reform curriculum to develop best practice strategies that can be duplicated in other areas.

  • Highlight and promote the positive results in states where school history reform has taken place.

  • Train organizations that are interested in reforming school curriculum in their states.

  • Recruit state governments who want to reform curriculum to join the coalition.
