The 4th Congressional Conversation on Race (CCR) focused on understating the connection between race and youth violence in Missouri’s 1st District. A diverse group of students and administrators from Harris-Stowe University, Washington University, University of Missouri, St. Louis Webster University, High school youth and administrators, law enforcement officials and other community leaders joined Congressmen Lacy Clay in a journey of learning St. Louis’ racial history and engaging in a genuine, honest dialogue. Starting at the Old Courthouse of St. Louis, the event included a tour where participants visited some of St. Louis’ most influential historic sites related to freedom, slavery, The Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Stopping at different locations such as the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing on the Mississippi River, Benton Barracks, the Swimming Pool at Fairground Park, and The Jefferson Bank, participants experienced the joint history of these sites engaged in discussions about the role of St. Louis’ history in shaping their present and future.
Almost 100% of the participants reported that they gained a greater awareness of race-related issues in St. Louis and, as a result of their experience, felt inspired to take action on the topic of youth violence in their communities. They also identified several tangible actions they will take such as raising awareness, educating about racial history, creating dialogues, and providing mentorships.
Some quotes from participants:
-
“This program was fantastic! Very well organized”
-
“A tremendously, incredibly awesome experiment”
-
“Today has given me a wakeup call on my race. It is always good to know about your history!”
