The True Roots Project
 What is The True Roots Project?
The True Roots Project gives at-risk, African American youth the opportunity to discover something precious about themselves using ancestry testing to reveal their true heritage. Rather than embracing a false identity defined in the context of poverty, drugs and violence they will have the opportunity to embrace their true roots – as proud sons and daughters of Africa in America.
Why is The True Roots Project important?
PROBLEM: Knowing where you are from helps you to shape your future. Too many African American youth do not know the truth about their heritage. Their lack of knowledge leads them to form an identity based on the present rather than the richness of their past. Unfortunately, their peer groups lead them to believe that they are victims instead of the descendants of great achievers.
SOLUTION: Fortunately, today’s cutting edge technology can fill in important blanks and give new answers. Ancestry tests can tell them what tribe or what African country they are from. Finding their family’s African roots and learning that they belong to a legacy of great achievers: the first doctors, scientists, theologians, writers, and scholars will reshape their identities in a way that can counter the negative attraction of the streets and motivate them to achieve. Knowing one’s ancestry makes a difference. In fact, it’s transformative.
