The True Roots Project
What will The True Roots Project involve?
The True Roots Project is a partnership initiative between Search for Common Ground, a non-profit organization committed to conflict transformation, and African Ancestry, a DC-based company that pioneered genetic African ancestry testing. We are partnering to:
- Provide ancestry testing for 100 at-risk, black Washington, DC youth
- Design a curriculum based on the science and technology behind ancestry testing, the cultural connections between Africa and America, the importance of personal ancestry and how it can be the foundation for personal success.
- Hold an "ancestry ceremony" where their true roots are revealed
- Produce a short film and multimedia presentation about the project.
This process will give these youth a new sense of grounding, inspiration and personal pride. As a result, it will help make our urban neighborhoods more peaceful and prosperous. It can also help our society see and embrace Black youth differently.
