The Journalists of Ni Nyampinga

Nadia, 17

Nadia began working with SFCG in 2010 when Ni Nyampinga was known as Urungano. To prepare for her work as a radio journalist, she received training from the BBC and local radio stations. Her favorite aspect of working with Ni Nyampinga is her ability to support her fellow peers by travelling into villages to meet a variety of Rwandan girls and seek out their opinions: “When I give them the microphone, I give them a channel to express themselves”. Nadia loves music and geography, and she aspires to be an international journalist.

Cecile

Cecile, 21

Cecile began working with SFCG in August 2011. She is a student at the Akilah Institute for Women, where she is learning how to enhance her leadership skills. She wears many hats as a Ni Nyampinga journalist, including presenter, interviewer, editor, and researcher. Her favorite role is that of editor, because she is able to transform the interviews collected in the field to make a powerful presentation of girls’ voices. Through her work with SFCG, she hopes to change the belief that only boys can attend school and be successful in life.

Bea

Bea, 23

Bea began working with SFCG in November 2009 with Urungano. Before working for the radio program, she thought radio was just for music. Now she is studying journalism at Kigali Independent University. Her favorite part of being a Ni Nyampinga journalist is having her voice represent the voices of her colleagues, friends, and fellow Rwandan girls.  Her experience with SFCG has given her a strong foundation that she will take with her to teach others.

Leonille, 20

Leonille began working with SFCG in 2008. She is currently studying law at Kigali Independent University. As a radio journalist with Ni Nyampinga, she enjoys editing and presenting. Her experience working with SFCG over the past 4 years has changed her life, as she has transformed from being shy to open and proud. She now aspires to be in the spotlight as an honest politician, hoping to model herself after Nelson Mandela.

Benie

Benie, 19

In addition to being a radio journalist, Benie studies math, chemistry, and biology in high school, which she balances by organizing herself. She is a firm believer in studying and learning from one’s mistakes. She began working with SFCG in August 2011 and feels her role with Ni Nyampinga is to be the voice of other girls and to highlight the problems they face. She most enjoys researching stories as a journalist, as well as meeting with other girls and discussing their common problems.

Sarah, 20

Sarah is a student at the Akilah Institute for Women. She began working with SFCG in August 2011 in order to apply the leadership skills she is learning at school to girls across Rwanda. For her, radio is an outlet to teach young girls how to focus on themselves and become entrepreneurs. She enjoys working in the field and interviewing different people. One day she hopes to empower young women by creating a company for female entrepreneurs in Africa.

Antoinette

Antoinette, 22

Antoinette began working with SFCG in March 2010 with Urungano. She is currently studying history, economics, and geography in her last year at secondary school. As a presenter for Ni Nyampinga, she enjoys being able to discuss difficult issues on the air in order to be an advocate for those that are not able to voice their opinions and needs. In the process of doing so, she feels she is also building her own personality and opinions. One day Antoinette hopes to be a journalist, lawyer, or actress.

Benigne, 20

Benigne began working with SFCG in 2008 through Urungano. She is currently studying IT at the National University of Rwanda and hopes one day to become a well-known IT person. When she interviews girls for Ni Nyampinga, she enjoys meeting interesting people and gathering their point of views to be reflected in the program’s content. As a journalist, she has found that many Rwandan girls have ideas to contribute but are not confident in expressing themselves. As a journalist and their peer, she encourages them to open up and be proud of their perspectives.
