Sunau Bolau Means Let's Listen, Let's Talk

Sunau Bola journalists interview Radhika Koomaraswamy -- listen to audio [mp3]

That is what happened when the United Nations Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Koomaraswamy, visited Nepal recently. The children journalists from Sunau Bolau, a weekly radio program broadcast throughout Nepal, were given the special opportunity to spend time with the UN Special Representative during her week-long visit.

While in Nepal, the UN Special Representative met with the Prime Minister, various Child Protection Organizations, media groups, and with children affected by the armed conflict. Sunau Bolau journalists were there to cover her visit.

Interviewed by one of the child journalists, she was asked to describe what the UN will do for the children after she leaves Nepal. While in Kathmandu, three of the children journalists did an exclusive 45 minute interview with her about the situation of children in Nepal. They discussed what her office’s role is in helping to stop children being manipulated towards violence, and also what they could do as child journalists.

Covering her trip was a reward for the remarkable work of the children journalists at Sunau Bolau. While none of the professional journalists were able to cover her visit, the children were given full access to her events and the places she visited. They had the opportunity to ask her inspirational as well as personal questions. This has been a milestone for Sunau Bolau journalists and it was a reflection on her commitment to children and to their well being.

Sunau Bolau is produced by Search for Common Ground (SFCG) in partnership with Antenna Foundation Nepal (AFN). The children’s radio program is broadcast weekly through the National Radio, Radio Nepal, and 29 FM stations throughout the country. Twenty-five child journalists from 17 districts throughout Nepal produce the program. The program covers broad range of issues concerning young people in Nepal, from HIV; to early marriage; to child labor; to the everyday concerns that kids have.
