Common Ground Media

Over the past three years the influence of Moroccan print and audiovisual media has grown exponentially and publications proliferated at a dizzying speed. With relaxed censorship laws and greater freedoms of expression, print journalism has managed to become an important player with regard to influencing its readership -- though literacy rates remain relatively low. Meanwhile, with the advent of satellite dish receivers, audiovisual media have penetrated almost every house in Morocco. Often times, however, the media inflame rather than inform the public discourse and contribute to the polarization of society on important issues. SFCG-M is working with Moroccan journalists to achieve two objectives:

  • Train Moroccan print journalists on Common Ground reporting and encourage them to author joint articles on polarizing social issues. Working with journalists also includes facilitated roundtables on the role of ethics in journalism and the required level of professionalism to create common ground media.

  • Utilize the audiovisual media to diffuse the message of dialogue and collaborative problem solving by producing and airing a debate series on relevant public-policy issues.
