Description: The Foundation’s office for the Middle East and North Africa focuses its grant making in the region on Egypt and the Palestinian autonomous areas. Grants also support activities in other countries in the region that have region-wide impact. The current annual grant budget for the Middle East and North Africa office is approximately US$8.5 million. Grants are made under four broad themes: Community and Resource Development, Reproductive Health, Arts and Culture, and Human Rights.

Eligibility: Most Ford Foundation grant funds are given to organizations, although it also makes a limited number of grants to individuals for research, training and other activities related to its program interests.

Deadline: There are no deadlines; apply at any time. A brief letter of inquiry is advisable to determine whether the Foundation’s present interests and funds permit consideration of the request.

Award: Varies by project and availability of funds.

Description: The goals of the Conflict Resolution/Human Rights Program are to enhance the resolution of international conflict and to assist in the prevention or resolution of human rights violations for displaced persons.

It seeks to support efforts that demonstrate the effectiveness of different strategies or models of conflict resolution training, show promise of broader application of the model in other locales, take a comprehensive, integrated approach to conflict resolution, increase the capacity of indigenous people or organizations to resolve conflicts, and have developed a plan for assessing the effectiveness of their program.

Award: The median grant size is US$60,000 per year.

Eligibility: National NGOs, international NGOs, public agencies. Send letter of inquiry first.

Deadline: Proposals considered four times a year in February, May, August, and November. The decision process usually requires three to four months.

Description: These fellowships support practitioners and scholars working on projects concerning the sources and nature of international conflict and ways of managing and sustaining peace. Priority will be given to proposals that promise to make a timely contribution to the understanding and resolution of ongoing and emerging international conflicts.

Proposals in all fields are welcome. The Institute expects to award about 12 fellowships for 2001-2002.

Award: The program attempts to match the recipient’s earned income during the year preceding the fellowship, subject to a federal pay ceiling. Fellowships are usually awarded for 10 months beginning in October.

Eligibility: Candidates must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited university. Fellowships are open to citizens of any country.

Deadline: For 2001-2002 fellowships, the deadline is September 15, 2000.

Description: The Woodrow Wilson Center awards approximately 20 residential fellowships annually in an international competition to individuals with outstanding project proposals in a broad range of the social sciences and humanities on national and/or international issues - topics that intersect with questions of public policy.

Award: The average support is approximately US$44,000, inclusive of travel expenses and 75 percent of health insurance premiums for fellows, their spouses, and their dependent children. Each Fellow is also assigned a furnished office with access to a library, computer, and a part-time research assistant.

Eligibility: Applications from any country are welcome.

Deadline: October 1, 2000
