Description: Now in its sixteenth year, this program offers ten fellowships per year to print journalists from developing and transitional countries with an emerging free press. The fellows spend five months working at an American print media organization and also attend three journalism seminars.

Award: Covers all travel expenses, and provides a $1,400/month stipend.

Description: NED is a private, nonprofit organization created to strengthen democratic institutions around the world through non-governmental efforts. With its annual congressional appropriation, it makes grants to support pro-democracy groups in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union.

The Endowment funds a variety of programs related to the goals stated above and is especially interested in proposals that originate with indigenous democratic groups. It is also interested in nonpartisan programs seeking to strengthen democratic values among all sectors of the democratic political spectrum. NED does not make grants to individuals.

Deadline: Proposals accepted year round; funding decisions made quarterly.

Scholar-in-Residence Program Middle East Institute (MEI)

Description: This program was created to provide a venue for scholars of diverse backgrounds and nationalities – working on contemporary Middle East issues – to pursue projects of research, writing and public speaking in Washington, DC.

Award: MEI will provide office facilities, including access to word processors, telephones, reproduction and fax facilities, as well as the Institute’s 25,000-volume library. Scholars-in-residence should expect to spend a minimum of 20 hours per week at the Institute, respond to media queries, conduct lectures, and organize seminars and conferences. Scholars will also be encouraged to prepare manuscripts for possible publication in the Middle East Journal.

MEI is unable to offer stipends for living or travel expenses but would support stipend applications to other institutions.

Eligibility: Application for these positions is open without discrimination as to citizenship or national origin.

Description: These awards enable outstanding scholars, policy makers, journalists, military officers and other professionals to conduct research on important issues concerning international conflict and peace. Project proposals that deal with the sources and nature of interstate or civil conflict, with ways to prevent, limit, or end violent conflict, and with post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation are welcome. For 2000-2001, the Institute expects to award about 12 fellowships.

Award: The program attempts to match the recipient’s earned income during the year preceding the fellowship, subject to a federal pay ceiling. Fellowships are usually awarded for 10 months beginning in October.

Eligibility: Candidates must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited university. Fellowships are open to citizens of any country.

Deadline: For 2000-2001 fellowships, the deadline is September 15, 1999.
