The Political-Economic Aspect of the Arab-Israeli Conflict and Peace Negotiations: An Overlooked Dimension or a Secondary Accessory?
The interaction between economics and politics seems to receive scant attention among analysts of Arab-Israeli relations. Political scientists and military strategists usually analyze those relations along strategic or diplomatic lines, while economists are interested in the economic consequences of cooperation between Israel and its neighbors. A consequence of the disassociation between economics and politics within the context of Arab-Israeli relations has been the tendency of Israeli and Arab leaders to attempt to settle security matters first, and only afterwards to negotiate the economic aspects. The question that will specifically concern this workshop, therefore, is why have the leaders given priority to security and territorial issues over economic issues?
