Ziggy Marley Public Service Announcements for Studio Ijambo

Son follows in his father's footsteps
We are grateful to Ziggy Marley for the enthusiasm with which he responded to our request to record Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for Studio Ijambo in Burundi. The PSAs, recorded both in English and in Kirundi (using phonetic pronunciation), are about respect for women, ending violence, the importance of dialogue, avoiding HIV/AIDS, and above all about unity. He asks Burundians to unite and to follow his father's calls for peace. The PSAs will be broadcast nationally throughout Burundi.

When we asked our staff in Burundi whose voice and messages have the potential to make an impact and to be listened to by Burundians, they chose Ziggy Marley. This is because the legend of Bob Marley is alive and huge in Burundi: his image is everywhere; his birthday is widely celebrated; his lyrics promoting "one love" and social revolution made him an icon in developing countries worldwide. Marley's lyrics were laden with references to spirituality, respect for nature, leading a healthy life, and calls for love and unity. His anthems still resonate throughout the world.

We thank Ziggy for taking time out from his concert tour to record the announcements, and we applaud his courage to speak in Kirundi! You can listen to the PSA announcements:
