Our Work

Burundi Flag

SFCG has been working in Burundi since 1995, and, in recent years, SFCG Burundi's primary objective has been to improve the participation of all citizens in the democratic process and in reconciliation. SFCG and its partners have recently developed a clear future vision for Burundi:

"In 2015, Burundi is the model of a just and fair society. One founded in inclusive, effective, and responsible participation of all in decision‐making institutions and processes."

In support of this goal, SFCG has outlined two specific objectives:

  • To build bridges of awareness, understanding, and acceptance between groups with differing viewpoints

  • To strengthen social cohesion that reinforces resistance to manipulation and violence.

Examining the conditions and factors that contribute to the continuing fragility of Burundi, SFCG identified five key issues to be addressed as priorities in the scope of these objectives:

  • Depolitization of the democratic dialogue

  • Youth engagement

  • Women's leadership

  • Access to land

  • Transitional Justice
